Our Ethos at Milford Pre-School Plus supports Sustainability and Stewardship

We teach our children to respect and care for the environment. Through hands-on experiences, we instill a sense of responsibility and awareness of our planet’s resources. Our curriculum encourages children to explore ideas and practices that promote environmental sustainability and to understand the interdependence between people and the environment.

Through our allotment the children learn how to grow and produce food which we then eat or cook with in our pre-school sessions. We have regular family allotment sessions where parents and members of the community help us maintain and care for our allotment, weeding and planting seasonal seeds, plants and vegetables. Find out more about how we promote sustainability in our setting by reading our sustainability policy and our Sustainability Action Plan. You can also see this in action on our Facebook page, we have included some examples below.

How we promote sustainability in our setting….

Our Allotment

Our allotment teaches children about how food is grown, how to care for plants, when to plant them, and how they can be used in the food we eat. Children learn about the seasons and which vegetables can be planted at different times of the year. They also become familiar with the tools needed to plant, grow, and care for the allotment. This promotes learning about sustainability, including caring for the environment, reducing food waste, and growing food responsibly. You can see the children in action on our Facebook page!

Learning opportunities

We include sustainability within learning by helping children understand climate change and the importance of protecting our environment. Through everyday activities, children learn how small actions can make a difference, such as turning off lights to save energy, recycling materials, reducing waste, and caring for the natural world. By developing these habits early, children build a sense of responsibility and respect for the environment, supporting them to become environmentally aware and sustainable citizens.

Forest School

Forest School supports sustainability by encouraging children to explore and connect with the natural environment while learning about local wildlife and habitats. Through hands-on outdoor experiences, children are supported to take appropriate risks, build confidence, and develop resilience, while also gaining an understanding of how to care for and respect nature. Learning about plants, animals, and ecosystems helps children recognise the importance of protecting the environment, fostering a sense of responsibility and stewardship that supports sustainable attitudes and behaviours.

We are an RHS Five Star Gardening School

Being a 5-star gardening school means we are recognized by the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) and signifies a high level of gardening education and community engagement. We focus on:

  • Hands-on gardening with children working alongside experienced staff and community members

  • Gardening through the seasons, ensuring that gardening activities occur throughout the year

  • Community involvement, where children learn to grow and share their gardening knowledge with others

We aim to inspire and nurture a passion for gardening among children, preparing them for future careers in the field.

We were shortlisted for the Wilder School Award 2023

Our pre-school was shortlisted for the Wilder School Award, recognising the actions we have made for wildlife and the environment. We attended the awards ceremony in Portsmouth where we got to watch a short video of all the entries for the Wilder School Award, we were the only pre-school to be nominated!
