At Milford Pre-School, we are very lucky to have the use of ‘Little Wood’’ and the allotment within the school grounds. We are also proud to hold an Eco-School green flag, the highest award a school can achieve. Our gardening in the allotment has gained us a top RHS school gardening 5-star award, and being a ‘Grow Wild’ School, we grow wild flowers to encourage the bees and butterflies.
The allotment is situated across the playground, from our back gate. Children are taken in small supervised groups to explore, dig, sow, water and care for a variety of fruits, vegetables, herbs and flowers. The children then harvest their produce, eat or cook them, i.e. making jam. They enjoy and gain lots of knowledge about life cycles, growth and decay, healthy eating and where food comes from.
Through the year we have family time in our allotment so you can come and join your children and enjoy our area, (weekends).
Our allotment is opened for the Milford on Sea, National Gardens Open Scheme and we enter out produce into the Milford produce show.
The ‘Little Wood’ area is situated at the top end of the school field, which we have regular use of. This area is fully supervised and risk assessed. ‘Little Wood’ has a shallow pond, where children can pond dip and discover what lives in the water. Children are to lay on their tummies when pond dipping. There is a fully supervised camp fire, where the children can cook their snack, make pancakes toast or waffles. Children also have the use of a mud kitchen, den making, tyre swing, woodwork and hammers, a fairy garden, whittling, clay.
